Mecha: Lifesize Scopedog Mecha
Monday, August 4th, 2008
“As part of its 150th anniversary celebration, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation got ironsmithing genius Kogoro Kurata to display his insane 1:1 scale model of the Scopedog mecha from the 80s anime series VOTOMS. Weighing in at two tons and standing a full four meters tall, it dwarfed everything else at the exhibition. The cast iron structure was actually finished in 2005 and has been on display before at other Japanese conventions…”

Eel Drink Goes On Sale For Japan’s Hot Summer
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008Eel Drink Goes On Sale For Japan’s Hot Summer
It’s the hottest season of the year in Japan, and that means it’s eel season. So, bottom’s up!
A canned drink called “Unagi Nobori,” or “Surging Eel,” made by Japan Tobacco Inc., hit the nation’s stores this month just ahead of Japan’s annual eel-eating season, company spokesman Kazunori Hayashi said Monday.
“It’s mainly for men who are exhausted by the summer’s heat,” Hayashi said of the beverage, believed to be the first mass-produced eel drink in Japan.
Many Japanese believe eating eel boosts stamina in hot weather.

Weird Japanese Products
Tuesday, May 20th, 2008Konnichwa everybody!
I just came a cross this weird interesting video podcast a few weeks ago that I thought I’d share. It’s brought to us by a Japanese news channel, and it’s called:
珍品堂 (chin-pin-doe)
which roughly means “Hall of Unique Products.” It’s basically a few overly-genki ladies introducing weird and crazy products in Japan (products that even the Japanese consider strange).
For example:
- postcards made from recycled horse manure
- a print-your-own-hat machine
- a $1,000 electronic fish scaler
- a solid gold computer keyboard
- ridiculous cell phone accessories
- etc… the list goes on and on…
The episodes are really short and the Japanese is pretty easy to understand, so it’s a quick fun way to get some Japanese practice. It’s definitely more interesting than typical Japanese TV, or most other made-in-Japan podcasts.

Some female coworkers showed this to me the other day. This girl does a pretty funny Beyonce impersonation. Apparently she’s become pretty famous for it.

Automatic Beer Pouring Machine
Saturday, November 10th, 2007I just got back from my favorite sushi place here in Tokyo. Aside from delicious cheap sushi, this place rocks because the entire restaurant is automated. I couldn’t help but document what could quite possibly be one of the greatest inventions of all time.
Ahh… perfect beer every time.
Now aren’t you jealous that you’re not here!?
